In July 1953 China took an interest in the field of automobile manufacturing, and invested for the first time in this field and built its first car manufacturing plant in July 1956. Thus, China produced its first car JIEFANG brand in July 1957. Due to her great dedication and determination, Chian developed, designed and manufactured from completely independent way by making HONGQI car which perfectly met the requirements and policies of the Chinese government.  Thus, by this great achievement, the manufacturing plant has fully benefited the support of the Government, because this HONGQI brand represents the symbol and image of China.   

In recent years, especially after China's reform and opening up to the world, China's auto industry has developed rapidly and adopted various high-tech automobile production, safety and convenience facilities.

The Beijing Automobile Manufacturing Plant and the Representatives of the American Automobile Company signed the "Operating Agreement" and "Joint Venture Charter" on May 05, 1983;  and thus planned to build the first auto manufacturing joint venture in the capital of China.

But according to the reforms to open up the Chinese market to the outside approved by DENG XIAOPING （the main designer of the said reform and the said opening）, the Volkswagen joint venture was officially installed in Shanghai in March 1985. This form  cooperation thus marked the end of the low-level history of "behind-the-scenes automobile manufacturing" in the Chinese automobile industry and thus opened the door to foreign investors and also to the introduction of technology to accelerate the Chinese development.

Indeed, four biggest conferences were held from March 25 to April 12, 1986 in Beijing during the Sixth National Assembly of China.  Thus during the conference the "pillar industries" were classified in the program of the "seventh five-year plan" by the project "seventh five-year plan for the national economic and social development of the People's Republic of China".
